# Copyright and takedown

Version 2026-10-19

How to tell us that something here is yours, or is of you, and should not be here, and what we do about it.

## Who this is for

Two different people use this document and they need different things.

- somebody whose own work has been published here by another person
- somebody who appears in material published here without having agreed to it

The second is treated ahead of the first. Copyright is a claim about ownership. A picture of a person who did not consent is a claim about that person, and it is more urgent.

## How to tell us

Use the contact form on the contact page and choose the subject for a legal notice. It is open to everybody, with or without an account.

A notice should give:

- which material, and where it is, as exactly as you can
- the work you own, or the fact that you are the person shown
- your name and an email address where we can reach you
- a statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not allowed by you, by your agent or by the law
- a statement that what you say is accurate, and, for a copyright claim, that you own the right or may act for the person who does

If you are telling us you appear in something without agreeing to it, say that clearly, because it takes a faster route.

## What happens

- material claimed as a picture of somebody who did not consent is removed while it is looked at, and put back only if that turns out to be wrong. Leaving it up while somebody decides is the harm
- a copyright claim is looked at before anything is removed, because a removal on an unexamined claim is a way of removing a competitor
- the person who published it is told what was claimed and why, and can answer with a counter notice through the same form
- either side can appeal, and the reporting and appeals document says how

## What we will not do

- we will not hand over one member's details to another member, in either direction, whatever the claim, unless a court or the law requires it
- we will not decide who owns something. We decide whether it stays here

## Repeat claims

An account that repeatedly publishes other people's work is closed. An account that repeatedly makes claims that turn out to be false is also acted on, because a false claim is a way of attacking somebody. Knowingly making a false claim may also make you liable to the person you claimed against.

## Changes

This document carries a version. When it changes the version changes, and a translation is published only when it is complete.
