# One fact, checked on one day

Every badge here means the same one thing. Somebody checked one fact about one person, on one day, and wrote down which fact and which day. That is all a badge is, and reading it that way is what makes it useful.

## What a badge shows you

Two things: which fact was checked, and the date it was checked. Each badge says on the page exactly what it covered, in plain words, so you never have to guess what was looked at. There is no score, no rating out of five and no ranking. A badge is not something a person can hold more of than somebody else. New kinds of badge are added as the site grows, which is why this page does not try to list them all.

## The date matters as much as the fact

A check is a photograph of one day. It says that something was true when somebody looked, and it says nothing about the weeks after that. A badge checked two years ago and a badge checked last week both mean one fact was checked, and they are not the same amount of information. The date is shown for that reason, so read it, and treat an old check as an old check.

## A live check proves one minute

Some checks ask a person to do a small action in front of a camera, right then, chosen at that moment so it cannot be prepared. A photograph cannot pass it and neither can a video recorded earlier. What it shows is that a real, present person was there at that minute. It does not show who they are, what they are like, or that they will be the person who turns up.

## A badge can be taken away

A badge only stays while the fact it names is still true. If it stops being true, or the check turns out to have been wrong, the badge goes and it disappears from that profile. Nothing announces it. So if you remember a profile holding a badge last month and it holds none now, that is worth noticing, and it is a fair thing to ask about.

## How to read a profile with no badge

No badge is not a warning. Plenty of people never ask to be checked, and some checks are only open to people doing particular things here. A profile with no badge is simply a profile where nobody checked anything, which is the ordinary state. What it means in practice is that everything on it is that person's own word, and you weigh it the way you weigh anybody's word.

## A badge is never us vouching for anybody

We do not vouch for people, and a badge is not us saying somebody is safe, honest or worth meeting. It records that one fact was checked. It tells you nothing about how a person behaves, how they treat anybody, or whether the two of you should be in a room together. Keep asking your own questions. Nothing here replaces that, and it was never built to.
