# The app, and the device you keep it on

There is no app store to visit and nothing to download. You open this site in your browser and keep it as an icon, and after that it behaves like an app you installed.

## It is the website, kept as an icon

Your browser can keep this site the way it keeps an app. It gets its own icon and its own window with no address bar and no tabs, so it looks like an app because at that point it is one. It opens faster, because your device keeps part of it ready instead of fetching everything again. Some parts still work when you have no signal at all.

## How to keep it as an icon

On a phone, open the browser menu and choose the entry about adding this to your home screen or installing it. The wording differs between browsers and it is always in that menu. On a computer, most browsers show a small install button in the address bar, and the same entry is in the menu. Nothing is downloaded from a store, nothing asks for a password, and it takes one tap.

## It updates itself, quietly

There is no version to keep an eye on and nothing to update by hand. The next time you open it, it is current. That also means a fault can be fixed for everybody at once instead of waiting on a store to approve it, which is part of why the site is built this way.

## Signing in ties it to this device

A passkey is kept by your device, or by the keychain your device syncs with, and it never leaves. That is exactly what makes it hard to steal: there is no password anywhere for anybody to guess, phish or read out of a leak. On a new device you start with an emailed code instead, because there is no key on it yet, and you can make a passkey there afterwards.

## What the icon does not give us

Keeping the site as an icon gives it no more reach into your device than a browser tab has. We cannot read your files, your photos, your messages or your contacts. We do not know where you are unless you tell us. None of that changes by installing it, and none of it changes back by removing it: it was never available either way.

## Removing the icon does not close your account

Deleting the icon deletes the icon. Your account lives on our side and not on your phone, so you can sign in again from any browser and find everything where you left it. If what you actually want is to close the account, that is a separate thing you do inside the app, and it says plainly what it will remove before it does anything.
